Winter 2 tryouts and concussion training
Due to the recent school cancelations, tryouts for the boys basketball and wrestling teams will begin on Tuesday, February 2 immediately after school and will end at 4:45pm. Tryouts will be a minimum of three days (Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday), but might be extended if needed. All participants are strongly encouraged to attend all three days so they can be fully evaluated by the the coaches. Athletes interested in basketball will report to the main gym and athletes interested in wrestling will report to the aux gym after changing clothes in the locker room. There is no special equipment required for either tryout. Please wear athletic attire.
There is no official signup sheet for tryouts. If participating in tryouts, your child will stay after school and report to the gym. Please make sure your child knows how they are getting home. All athletes must be picked up from tryouts at 4:45pm or take the activity bus which leaves at 5:00pm. Coaches will help athletes get on the correct bus.
Tryout Requirements: All participants are required to have a "sports physical" and proof of concussion training on file with Mr. Bukva before they are allowed to participate in tryouts. However, due to the most recent face-to-face training being canceled, the concussion training will be waived for Tuesday only. Students who are missing the concussion training requirement will be informed at the beginning of tryouts and an attempt will be made to contact a parent. The sports physical is still a nonnegotiable requirement. Please see the attached document for the sports physical form. If you cannot be seen by your regular doctor by Tuesday, you can try the CVS Minute Clinic or the Target Clinic.
Concussion Training: A face-to-face training will be held at Reagan Middle School in the cafeteria at 6:00pm. Please be on time. Once the training begins, we are not allowed to add late participants. Students must attend with a parent or guardian. This training is for any tryout participants who have not fulfilled the concussion training requirement for Winter sports or for those who want to fulfill the requirement for Spring sports. Another face-to-face training will be offered prior to Spring tryouts. If your child has already completed a face-to-face or online training, or participated in another school sport then the requirement has been met. As always, those who have participated in a face-to-face or online training in past years can complete the training online at https://online-concussion.pwcs.edu. The online training is not for 6th graders or those new to PWCS. Those people must attend a face-to-face training.
Parents of children who will be trying out for a sport or joining an athletic club in a Prince William County middle school for the first time must attend a face-to-face concussion training session with their student(s). The following sessions have been scheduled for Reagan Middle School students:
All face-to-face concussion training sessions will be held in the cafeteria. The student athlete must attend the training with a parent/guardian. Please do not be late. The session will be closed once it begins.
Students and their parents/guardians who have previously participated in a Prince William County middle school face-to-face concussion training session are eligible to complete this year's training requirement online. This web-based training is now available at https://online-concussion.pwcs.edu.
Please complete the training and print the certificate that is emailed to you. The certificate must be turned into Mr. Bukva. This website has a history to being busy as it gets closer to tryouts dates. Do not delay getting this training completed. You must watch all of the videos and answer the questions. Fast-forwarding through the videos will cause the system to delay and might lock you out of the website.
